J.Krishnamurti

"If you have to create a new world, a new civilization, a new art, everything new, not contaminated by tradition, by fear, by ambitions, if you have to create something anonymous which is yours and mine, a new society, together, in which there is not you and me but an "ourness," must there not be a mind which is completely anonymous, therefore alone? This implies, does it not, that there must be a revolt against conformity, a revolt against respectability, because the respectable man is the mediocre man because he wants something, he is dependent on influence for his happiness, on what his neighbor thinks, on what his guru thinks, on what the Bhagavad-Gita or the Upanishads or the Bible or the Christ says. His mind is never alone. He never walks alone, but he always walks with a companion, the companion of his ideas.

Is it not important to find out, to see, the whole significance of interference, of influence, the establishment of the 'me', which is the contradiction of the anonymous? Seeing the whole of that, does not the question inevitably arise: Is it possible immediately to bring about that state of mind which is not influenced, which cannot be influenced by its own experience or by the experience of others, a mind which is incorruptible, which is alone? Then only is there a possibility of bringing about a different world, a different culture, a different society in which happiness is possible. "

Masanobu Fukoaka

Masanobu Fukoaka brought the 'do nothing' (wu wei) principle of taoism to the agriculture.

His philosophy has a lot in common with permaculture. Although he didn't consider himself part of this movement, he did persue very simmilar objectives: taking care of the Earth and the human beings. Healing the soil to avoid innecesary work to the farmers that in many cases is also agressive with the environment.

His ideas are explained in the book "The one straw revolution".

Flour mill

I believe there is a large majority of Westerners that have forgotten that the flour comes from the cereal grains that must be grinded. Here you can find some drawing of the classical handmade flour mills.

This one is more modern, but for those who would like to be prepared for an eventual blackout, I think it is the perfect gift.

Nendo Dango

Mater Fukoaka developed a method to reforest arid lands. It is based in protecting the seeds with clay balls of about one inch, that spread in a natural way along the land, will allow the seed to germinate with the first rains. It is the nendo dango.

In a world where the climate change is turning into desert large extensions, this could be a way to create new forest.

From this method, fundation + trees has writen a manual to help reforest arid areas of Spain that are becoming deserts.

Homeschooling

There are some countries where teaching your kids from your own house, without daily attendance to a school is legal. There are some others were it is not.

In those countries where it is legal, parents can decide which values will they teach their kids, which information is important for them, which will help them in the future. Teaching the kids from you house is usually called homeschooling. It is a practice proven to develop the creativity and initiative of the kids, agains the traditional systems that are designed to obtain blind obedience and mechanique knowledge.

Earthship

An earthship is a type of passive solar house made of natural and recycled materials. The homes are primarily constructed to work autonomously and are generally made of earth-filled tires, using thermal massconstruction to naturally regulate indoor temperature. They also usually have their own special natural ventilation system. Earthships are generally Off-the-grid homes, minimizing their reliance on public utilities and fossil fuels.
